3 Truths All Singles Should Remember

Valentine’s Day. A holiday that celebrates love. You know what I love? The day AFTER Valentine’s Day when all of the chocolate is on sale.

If you’re in a relationship, you probably look forward to Valentine’s Day. For those of us who are single, it’s often referred to as “Singleness Awareness Day.” I don’t need a special day to remind me that I’m single (that already happens most days), but during the month of February, singleness is often magnified.
I never expected to be single in my mid-30’s. It isn’t easy. I still desire to be a wife and a mother one day, but God has used this time as a single adult to teach me a few things.

Here are 3 truths all singles should remember….

1. A significant other does not determine your significance.

  • Our significance comes from God. He calls us His masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10). God created us in His image, and He has a plan and a purpose for our lives (Jeremiah 29:11).

  • Even without a significant other, you can still make a significant impact in the world. Use your gifts, skills, and time and invest in the lives of others.

2. You deserve to be with someone who treats you with respect.

  • If you are thinking about entering into a relationship with someone, consider: Do they respect your values/beliefs, your wants/needs, your time, and your boundaries? Do you trust them? Do you feel safe around them? Do their words match their actions? Do you see patterns of behavior that cause you to have concerns? It’s better to remain single than to be in a relationship with someone who doesn’t show you the love and respect you deserve.

  • Ask God to give you wisdom and discernment about any potential relationship. Trust His guidance.

3. Instead of waiting to fall in love, go and BE love.

  • Invest in friendships. Look for opportunities to do random acts of kindness. Speak words of encouragement. Give sincere compliments. Serve others. Love the people God has already put around you.

  • “Jesus told his friends that letting people see the way we love each other would be the best way to let people know about Him.” ~ Bob Goff

I highly recommend these two books. Bob Goff gives great examples of what it looks like to love others in our everyday lives.
